Tabula was born from an ordinary working relationship turned extraordinary. Karman was the client, and Mike his video partner. Karman understood how clients and agencies wanted to buy and use videos, and Mike understood how to produce them. Cue lightbulb graphic.
Over the course of producing more than 30 videos together, extending one another’s ideas and making magic happen, for clients like Genentech, Roche, Juno, Ultragenyx and Bank of the West, they both saw an opportunity to make video quality, effectiveness and engagement better, while making video production easier, faster and more cost effective. More importantly, they both believed in the power of video to tell stories with equal parts business and human impact. With that shared understanding – over a gorgeous meal at a tabula – the agency was born.
Co-founder & Strategy Principal
Karman brings more than 20 years of strategy experience to Tabula, having led branding, communications and culture programs for some of the most respected brands in the world. He uses his multi-disciplinary experience to help organizations define and activate their brands, while fostering and sustaining the cultures required for them to thrive.
As a strategic and creative agency lead, Karman has found video to be the single most effective way to bring business strategy to life, and instill humanity and emotion into corporate dialogues and cultures.
Karman has advised clients in strategic roles at management consulting firm, Oliver Wyman; integrated marketing and communications agency, W2O Group; brand consultancy, Lippincott; and communications agency, Bonfire. A graduate of UCLA, he began his career as a consultant for Deloitte.
Over his career, Karman has advised a range of world-class clients including 3M, Amgen, Bank of the West, Banana Republic, Chevron, Cisco, Comcast, Ecolab, Gap Inc., Genentech, GSK, Marsh & McLennan, Mercer, Nokia, Optum, Roche, Salesforce, Shell, Stryker, SunPower and Visa.
Away from work, Karman cherishes time with his two children, typically enjoying travel, hiking, photography and culinary adventures across the Bay Area and beyond. He exercises his creative muscle through an array of passion projects that span personal branding and interior design. He’s always seeking to connect with those equally obsessed with 50’s architecture, 80’s sports cars and 90’s hip hop.
Co-founder & Video Principal
As a digital content professional with a successful career as an innovator in video, technology, Web content and motion picture audio, Mike has done groundbreaking work on behalf of such companies as Genentech, Salesforce, Google, Facebook, Nokia, LucasFilm, 20th Century Fox, Nextracker, American Airlines and the California Health Department.
Prior to Tabula, Mike founded One to One Box, and worked as a sound editor on over three-dozen feature films, including Star Wars, Moulin Rouge, Titanic and The English Patient, both of which won the Academy Award for Best Sound and Best Picture. He was nominated for a Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Award for his work on Moulin Rouge.
Unsatisfied with this seemingly impressive list of achievements, Mike spends his spare time punishing himself as a competitive runner, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in sound design, is a foodie by osmosis and likes to think he knows something about wine. He recently had an opportunity to combine his passions for running and filmmaking as co-creator of the mockumentary webisode series, Running People.
Mike received an MFA in filmmaking with highest honors from California Academy of the Arts and holds a BA from The University of Chicago, where he was a three-time All-American and the Amos Along Stagg Scholar Athlete. But his proudest achievement is being the father of two amazing daughters.
The Tabula Name
Tabula is a Latin word for writing tablet, slate or table – all things that relate to our work. Videos are a form of communication. Videos, as a set, are known as a slate. Videos foster conversation, community and engagement, the way a table does when it brings people together for a meal. As voracious foodies, just about everything that Karman and Mike do start from or end with delicious food enjoyed at a tabula.
